Ovarian Neoplasms of Childhood and Adolescence

  • Chapter
Pathology of the Female Genital Tract

Abstract

Ovarian neoplasms occurring in children and adolescents during the first two decades of life comprise a very special group of lesions. They are special not because of any major histologic differences in types of neoplasms as compared with those of adults, but because of the clinical and therapeutic implications. In the treatment of these young patients it is essential that whenever possible ovarian tissue be preserved in order to ensure future normal physical development and child-bearing potential. However, it is equally essential that the malignant neoplasms be appropriately eradicated. Too often, in the past, children and young women have been unnecessarily castrated on the basis that an ovarian tumor in this age group, particularly when solid, is malignant and requires radical surgery. It is mandatory that ovarian neoplasms in children and adolescents be accurately classified and their natural history clearly understood.
