Abstract

Investigations on diabetes in Romania have been extended over a period of more than 60 years. In 1921, Paulescu discovered insulin although late, his priority is today recognized by most of the scientific world. In 1938 an Antidiabetic Center was opened in Bucharest, diabetics being treated until then in out-patient units by physicians specialized in this field. Today, more than 38,000 diabetics of Bucharest and the surrounding districts, as well as the problem cases from the entire country, are cared for here. There are similar units in the other county centers of our country. But the unit in Bucharest is the central methodological authority and it works together with the Center of Nutrition within the Institute of Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases.
