Abstract
Diet therapy is of critical importance in the management and control of diabetes mellitus. The aims of the diabetic diet are:

1.
To supply adequate amounts of all necessary nutrients — carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals — as well as adequate calories.

2.
To help normalize body weight.
-
3.
To help correct the carbohydrate dysmetabolism.
-
4.
To maintain blood lipids within the normal range, and
-
5.
To improve the patients feeling of well being and permit normal activity.
