Abstract

We have recently demonstrated that rat colon can convert 14Carachidonic acid into both lipoxygenase and cyclo-oxygenase products, and that this metabolism is stimulated by the laxative phenolphthalein (Capasso et al 1984). These products can affect intestinal function. Prostaglandins (Bennett and Sanger 1982) and lipoxygenase products (Musch et al 1982) can increase intestinal motility and the secretion of water and electrolytes. Human colon forms similar products (Bennett et al 1981; Boughton-Smith et al 1983), and we have now investigated the effect of laxatives on arachidonic acid metabolism by human isolated colonic mucosa and muscle.
