Abstract
This lecture is intended as an elementary introduction to a theory of two-dimensional melting proposed by Kosterlitz and Thouless1. Their theory is also applicable, with minor differences, to the two-dimensional planar spin model and since this is somewhat simpler we shall discuss it first.
