Abstract

Criticisms have been made of the use of faecal coliforms (f.c.) as an indicator (Dutka, 1973; Bonde, 1975) of pathogenic bacterial or viral pollutin and of the use of a specific f.c. concentration threshold as an indication of human health hazard (Cabelli, 1981), yet it has become an accepted procedure (C.E.C., 1975) and is widely applied in estuarine and coastal pollution management.
