Abstract

Recent progress in the fields of molecular action of steroid hormones and of the role of proto-/oncogenes in cell regulation and transformation can be exploited to delineate the mechanisms by which steroid hormones act in establishing malignancy. The alignment of proto-/oncogenes with hormone responsive elements, either by rearrangement, translocation or viral integration, will render these genes responsive to hormones, with all the consequences for carcinogenesis of their unphysiological expression under the hormonal stimulus.
