Abstract

For hundreds of years developmental biologists have yearned to peer inside the embryo as it develops, to appreciate the beauty and intricacies of morphogenesis from a front row seat. As microscopes have been improved and technology has flourished, our vantage point is improving. Advances in lasers, computer hardware and software, optical engineering, microscopy, and digital imaging have greatly changed not only how observations of living systems can be made, but what can be observed. Alongside the development of advanced technology, there has been an explosion of knowledge in the area of molecular signaling mechanisms.
