Part of the book series: Methods in Physiology Series ((METHPHYS))

Abstract

The reduction of oxygen by one electron creates superoxide (O2 ), a free radical with surprisingly little reactivity, except with itself. The reactive oxygen is reduced to water through the acceptance of three additional electrons. However, during this process the relatively inert O2 gives rise to a series of highly reactive oxidants. The production of these oxidants is discussed in the following.
