Abstract
During the closing weeks of the 1980s two significant events occurred in the world of computer chess. In a two game match played in New York, the reigning World Chess Champion, Gary Kasparov, soundly thrashed the reigning World Computer Chess Champion, Deep Thought. A few weeks later Deep Thought crushed the author of this chapter, a retired International Master who had hitherto never lost a match against a computer program.
