Receptor-Controlled Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Bisphosphate Hydrolysis in the Control of Rapid Receptor-Mediated Cellular Responses and of Cellular Proliferation

  • Chapter
Mechanisms of Receptor Regulation

Part of the book series: New Horizons in Therapeutics ((NHTH))

Abstract

Calcium ions were assigned an important role in the control of cell functions such as contraction and secretion many years ago, but this early physiological and pharmacological work was largely ignored by most biochemists until quite recently (e.g., Rasmussen, 1969; Berridge, 1975). Moreover, the discovery of cAMP in the 1950s established a pattern of thought, particularly dominant among biochemists in the 1960s, in which the search for cellular signaling mechanisms was concentrated on attempts to identify enzymically synthesized and water-soluble intracellular “second messengers.”
