Abstract

The original concept of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET) evolved from an attempt to circumvent the role of the fallopian tube in the reproductive process. The first successful IVF procedure resulting in the birth of Louise Brown in 1978 occurred in a woman with irreparable tubal disease. However, as is frequently the case with any new medical technology, the application of IVF rapidly expanded to include cases of infertility due to other causes, including endometriosis, male factor, idiopathic or unexplained infertility, or a combination of these.
