Abstract

There is good evidence that β-carbolines (BC’s), potentially psychoactive compounds, are present endogenously in mammalian tissues (Mc Isaac, 1961; Honecker and Rommelspacher, 1978; Johnson et al., 1984). The biosynthesis of these compounds, however, is at present not established. BC’s have been synthesized chemically by the Bischler-Napieralski cyclisation (Whaley and Govindachari, 1951a; route I of fig. 1) and by the Pictet Spengler condensation (Whaley and Govindachari, 1951b; route II and III of fig. 1).
