Adenosine Receptors as Drug Targets: Fulfilling the Promise?

  • Conference paper
Purines in Cellular Signaling

Abstract

The purine nucleoside, adenosine, has undergone a research renaissance in the past decade fuelled by a more focussed delineation of the A1 and A2 receptor types that mediate its actions in mammalian tissues (Hamprecht and Van Calker, 1985). These receptors have a distinct pharmacology and tissue distribution that offer the potential for the development of selective modulators of adenosine related effects that may have use as therapeutic entities (Williams, 1990).
