Upper Abdominal Surgery

Abstract

Liver surgery has become possible and successful with the advancement of general anesthesia, blood transfusion, and perioperative intensive care support but remains a challenging and difficult area of general surgery. Technical advances, such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), cell savers, and ultrasound dissectors have assisted, and refinements in diagnostic radiological techniques and interventional strategies have led to better selection and management of patients appropriate for surgery. This chapter aims to provide useful information on complications, risks, and consequences of a number of surgical liver resection procedures. For other associated procedures, refer to the relevant chapter and volume.
