Abstract
Yavalath is a recently invented board game which has proven to be popular with players but is distinguished by one remarkable fact: it is the first computer-designed board game to be commercially released. This chapter introduces Yavalath and outlines some of the questions that it raises with respect to computational creativity. Was the invention of Yavalath a creative act? Should the mantle of creator lie with the programme or the programmer? A brief outline of the history and motivation behind the Ludi project for evolutionary game design is presented.
Human beings are never more ingenious than in the invention of games.
