Abstract
Sooner or later in every study of media communication we must descend from the high ground which offers us an overview of the terrain to examine texts and practices — the specifics which provide evidence to substantiate theories. So far attention has been trained on generalities such as the nature of audience and audience response and the purpose, within context, of mass communication. More than any other message form, the news provides us with documentation that illustrates and illuminates key connections — between public communication and the exercise of power, between freedom and control, between reality and representation. It is, by its content and its shaping, a discourse which purports both to present reality and to explain it.
