Abstract
In car body construction, customer-visible parts have to fulfill the highest standards for optical quality (class-A surface quality). For connections of these components, laser beam brazing with copper-based filler wire is used in serial production because of its high achievable optical seam quality. To fulfil the high-quality standards, several features like the seam edge geometry, surface pores or the surface texture of the seam have to be inspected. A recent approach of filler wire oscillation has shown the capability of increasing the quality of the seam edge. However, for the industrial use of the wire oscillation, the other mentioned features relating to seam quality have to be investigated. In this study, the influence of the wire movement on the surface quality is investigated by superimposing the wire feed with a longitudinal oscillation at different oscillation frequencies up to 250 Hz. It can be seen, that the oscillation frequency influences the movement of the melt pool. In every oscillation cycle the melt pool expands and gets pushed back by the yet solid parts of the wire. This results in a discontinuous solidification process and creates ripples in the seam surface, which appear in the same frequency as the wire oscillation. Furthermore, the wire oscillation can interrupt the surface oxide layer within the oscillation cycle which accumulates aperiodic at the surface of the seam for constant wire feeds. This periodically interrupted oxide layer creates a uniform distributed pattern on the seam surface and increases the optical seam quality.
