Abstract

Self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies are essential to gain expertise in a new field of study. To best capitalize on an effective strategy requires strong meta-cognitive skills, which are associated with positive learning outcomes and testing performance.

In studies of hundreds of college students, five of fifteen strategies were shown to be statistically significant in improving scores during testing performance. These were self-evaluation, seeking information, goal setting and planning, reviewing exams, and reviewing notes. It was also shown that those students who maintained or improved to high scores, more frequently utilized SRL strategies when compared to their peers.

We will discuss two learning theories: Kolb’s processing and perception continuum, and constructivism. Understanding these theories will help explain why these SRL strategies and meta-cognitive skills will help you fully engage in your learning potential.
