Abstract
Addiction, or “substance use disorder (SUD),” is characterized by maladaptive substance use that is associated with adverse consequences in term of mental, physical, and social functioning. The state of addiction is associated with predictable alterations of central nervous system (CNS) function and neurobiology that, in turn, are predictive of behavioral patterns and functional declines. As such, SUDs are accurately characterized as a chronic relapsing disease of the brain.
