Current and Emerging Trends in Aging and Work

Abstract

This chapter provides a review of the significant demographic and social changes that are shaping the workplace of today and tomorrow. One trend that is discussed is the aging and increased diversity of the workforce. According to recent data from the U.S. Census, by 2050 about 19% of the workforce will be aged 65 or older—a 75% growth of the number of workers in this age group as compared to a 2% growth in individuals aged 25–54 years. The entire workforce, including older workers, is also becoming more ethnically diverse. Further, patterns of work and retirement are changing. It is no longer a “lock step process”—most workers are making many more transitions throughout their working life and move in and out of different work experiences. There are also dramatic changes in work structures and organizations, and a greater emphasis on jobs that require advanced degrees or training. Technology is also becoming ubiquitous within work environments. The implications of these changes for older workers are discussed and common stereotypes about older workers are highlighted. An overview of the book is also provided.
