Abstract
Chemosignals emanating from specialised sebaceous glands located at the oral angles of the Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus palmarum, can elicit aggressive behaviour in consecifics (Bhaskaran and Alexander, 1985). However, the perception of these chemosignals is under the influence of hormones, especially gonadal steroids. Despite the considerable literature on the role of gonadal steroids on aggressive behaviour in both murine and microtine rodents, little attention has been focused on sciurid rodents. Accordingly, this study was undertaken to elucidate the hormonal modulation of aggressive behaviour in one sciurid rodent, the Indian palm squirrel Funambulus palmarum.
