Editors’ Note: On January 6, 2000, the FDA promulgated a finalized regulation defining the types of statements that can be made concerning the effect of a supplement on the structure or function of the body and clarifying the differences between the types of claims that may be made for dietary supplements without prior review by the FDA and the types of claims that require prior authorization as health claims. The rule became effective on February 7, 2000, and is found at 65 Federal Register 1000.
