It is with deep sadness that I inform our readers of a painful loss in our community. After a serious illness, Mila Nikolova passed away on June 20, 2018. Mila coauthored seven JMIV papers and supported us as a knowledgeable reviewer over many years. She joined our editorial board in 2014.

Mila Nikolova made a number of outstanding contributions to the field of mathematical signal and image processing. To highlight a few: her thorough analysis of the structure of minimizers of cost functions with nondifferentiable data and smoothness terms, her work on variational methods for outlier removal, and her research on algorithms for finding global minimizers of certain nonconvex problems.

As an associate editor of JMIV, Mila was always reliable, fair, and committed to the highest scientific standards. Even in situations where her health status became critical, she did an admirable job, and her enthusiasm and optimism were exemplary.

Returning from her funeral today, I would like to announce that we are planning to publish a special issue with invited contributions dedicated to her memory. It may serve as a little token of our appreciation of her as a wonderful colleague, collaborator, and friend.
