Abstract
This article describes the development of the Therapist Use-of-Self Orientation Questionnaire (TUSO-Q), an instrument designed to measure therapists’ use-of-self orientations while working with clients. A total of 373 therapists participated in this study. Exploratory factor analysis in the structural equation modeling context revealed three different therapist use-of-self orientations: Transpersonal, Contextual, and Instrumental. The final model provided an excellent fit to the data. TUSO-Q scores exhibited satisfactory evidence of internal consistency reliability and construct validity. Implications for the scale’s use in clinical research and training are discussed.

Notes
ESEM was recently implemented in MPlus 5.1 statistical program (Muthén and Muthén 2007).
Each of the three one-factor models (corresponding to the three TUSO-Q factors) provided an adequate fit to the data. Contextual factor model: χ 2(5) = 8.13, p < .15, RMSEA = .041, SRMR = .021, CFI = .992, TLI = .983. Transpersonal factor model: χ 2(9) = 19.76, p < .02, RMSEA = .057, SRMR = .026, CFI = .983, TLI = .972. Instrumental factor model: χ 2(5) = 7.20, p < .98, RMSEA = .034, SRMR = .020, CFI = .994, TLI = .987.
