De impasse van het monisme: ‘Je geld of je leven!’

Samenvatting

Lectuur van ‘De hersenen van Ulrike Meinhof’ stelt mij gerust wat de hersenen van Max Lauteslager betreft. De reden daarvoor heeft natuurlijk te maken met het feit dat zijn standpunt betreffende de verhouding psyche-soma en de impact daarvan op het gedrag grotendeels overeenkomt met het mijne – bien heureux de se retrouver ensemble. Ik hoop evenwel dat de reden voor mijn geruststelling verder gaat dan alleen maar deze herkenning van een gedeeld standpunt. Meer bepaald hoop ik dat onze opvatting ook wetenschappelijk onderbouwd kan worden.

  1. Er is niets nieuws onder de zon. Monisme is de term waarmee in het begin van de 19e eeuw de anatomisten aangeduid werden, zijnde diegenen die ervan overtuigd waren dat de oorzaak van wat wij nu psychopathologie noemen uitsluitend te zoeken viel in het anatomische veld. Daartegenover stonden de dualisten die – in onze terminologie uitgedrukt – de etiologie zowel in de nature als in de nurture gaan zoeken.

  2. In het origineel klinkt het zo veel mooier: Tel est l'effroi qui s'empare de l'homme à découvrir la figure de son pouvoir qu'il s'en détourne dans l'action même qui est la sienne quand cette action la montre nue (Lacan, 1966, p. 242).
