The Glued intraocular lens technique was introduced by Prof. Agarwal in 2007, and it differed from the Scharioth intraocular lens technique by creating scleral flaps under which the haptics were externalized and by using fibrin glue to seal the scleral flaps and conjunctiva. This had advantages of avoiding any exposed part of the haptic as well as decreasing the risk of endophthalmitis by having the sclerotomy completely covered by the scleral flap. The fibrin glue was not actually aiding to the stability but just to close the scleral flap and conjunctiva. The stability of the Glued IOL technique comes from the intrascleral Scharioth tuck. This series of educational videos shows the Glued intraocular lens technique and basically breaks the steps down into multiple understandable bits. It starts with an introductory segment on intrascleral haptic fixation and then goes on to describe the steps of the Glued intraocular lens technique in detail. The last section is one on further reading for any viewer who is interested in getting more information on this technique.

Introduction

This is a video that will provide viewers with the ability to easily and effectively incorporate glued intraocular lens surgery into their practice. It is part of the Techniques in Ophthalmology video series, created for ophthalmologists in all stages of their career.

Hi, everyone. I am Soosan Jacob from Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Chennai, India. And in this video, I will be demonstrating the steps of performing intra-scleral haptic fixation via the glued intraocular lens technique.

Intraocular lenses can be fixated to the sclera either via sutures or using the intra-scleral haptic fixation. The ISHF, or the intra-scleral haptic fixation, can be done via the glued intraocular lens technique or the more recently described Yamane fixation. While the haptics of the intraocular lens are tucked into intra-scleral Scharioth tunnels in the glued intraocular lens technique, the Yamane uses a flanged intra-scleral IOL fixation using a double needle technique.

For more information about the intra-scleral haptic fixation technique, as well as the glued intraocular lens, I suggest that you look at the further reading section at the end of this series of educational videos.
