Structure of Higher Education System
Description
Higher education is provided by public and private universities and institutes. The Consejo Interuniversitario Nacional (CIN) coordinates policies of the State-run universities and their relationship with public and private, national and foreign bodies; draws up proposals for the national recognition of complete and partial studies and related degrees and diplomas, and for the national validation of foreign qualifications. Private universities are autonomous but must be recognized by the State, and their statutes, courses and programmes must be approved by it. They are grouped under the Consejo de Rectores de Universidades Privadas (CRUP). Through their Steering Committees, CIN and CRUP form part of the University (Consejo de Universidades) and Higher Education Regional Planning Councils (CPRES), to which the Ministry turns to in order to address some affairs regarding university policies.
