Structure of Higher Education System
Description
Public higher education is mainly provided by the University of Burundi and the National School of Administration. Several private higher education institutions exist, both non-profit and for-profit. Since 2011, the diplôme d’Etat is the only examination giving access to higher education.
Stages of studies
University level first stage
Premier cycle
The first stage of study leads to the Bachelier degree and lasts for three years.
University level second stage
Second cycle
A further two years’ study beyond the Bachelier degree leads to the Mastère (sometimes known as Maîtrise).
University level third stage
Troisième cycle
A Doctorat is conferred in three years following the Mastère.
