Abstract

The word bioeconomics (sometimes bionomics) has been used to describe two separate fields of investigation: (a) the economics of biological systems – that is the ways in which biological organisms and communities utilize scarce resources such as space, time, and sources of sustenance; and (b) biological resource economics – the ways in which the economic activities of human societies interact with the dynamics of biological systems. Bioeconomics is thus either a branch of biology (Wilson 1975; May 1981; Krebs and Davies 1984), or of economics (Clark 1976). For further discussion of the second interpretation.
