Steindl, Josef (1912–1993)

Abstract

Steindl was born in Vienna on 14 April 1912. He studied economics in Vienna and received his Ph.D. working under Richard Strigl. He worked in the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (AIER) from 1935 to 1938, the year of his emigration to England. He was a lecturer at Balliol College, Oxford, from 1938 to 1941, and then a research worker at the Oxford Institute of Statistics. He worked there with Michal Kalecki, who left a lasting mark on his theoretical work. He returned to Austria in 1950. He was barred from teaching at the University of Vienna for ideological reasons and resumed his job at AIER, where he worked until his retirement in 1978. In 1970, however, the University of Vienna bestowed upon him a honorary professorship. He was visiting professor at Stanford University in 1974/5.
