Stephen, Leslie (1832–1904)
Stephen was born in London on 28 November 1832 and died there on 21 February 1904. He was educated at Eton, King’s College London, and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he graduated as twentieth Wrangler in 1854. After holding a Fellowship at Trinity Hall from 1854 to 1867, he worked in London as a literary journalist and freelance man of letters. He edited the Cornhill Magazine from 1871 to 1882, and was the first editor of the Dictionary of National Biography from 1882 to 1891.
