Abstract
Simmel was born in Berlin. He became a lecturer in the University of Berlin in 1885 but was not promoted beyond the position of Extraordinary Professor. This was mainly because of his Jewish ancestry. Reluctantly he finally accepted a call from Strassburg to become Professor of Philosophy.
