Abstract

Spiegel was born in Germany, where he received his early education in the classics and law. The rise of the Nazi regime and a fellowship offer from Cornell brought him to the United States in 1936. In 1939 he received his PhD from Wisconsin. After brief sojourns at Duquesne University and in the US Army, he visited Brazil on a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1947 he accepted a position at the Catholic University in Washington, DC, his permanent base until his retirement in 1977.
