Abstract

William Smart was an entrepreneur turned academic economist. Born at Barrhead in Renfrewshire on 10 April 1853, he was educated at the University of Glasgow, where he was later to occupy the (newly created) Adam Smith Chair of Political Economy from 1896 until his death on 19 March 1915. However, his transition from student to professor was interrupted by a successful career in industry which began in the early 1870s and terminated in 1884 when the firm in which he was a partner was sold to the considerable financial advantage of its principals.
