Stigler’s Contributions to Microeconomics and Industrial Organization

Abstract

George Stigler has adapted and enhanced microeconomic theory so that it can be used to analyse a wide range of real phenomena. He has been concerned as much with testing the implications of theory as with developing elegant new models. Stigler has made important substantive contributions and demonstrated the power of microeconomic theory, without making heavy use of advanced mathematical technique. He has an extraordinary ability to pose important questions clearly and to address them with exceptional economic insight and ingenuity. His prose is clear and incisive, and his wit justly famous.
