Schmoller was born in Heilbronn, the son of a Württemberg civil servant. He studied Staatswissenschaften (a combination of economics, history and administrative science) in Tübingen. After a short period in the financial department of the Württemberg civil service, which he had to quit because of his pro-Prussian views, be became Professor in Halle (1864–72), Strassburg (1872–82), and Berlin (1882–1913).
