Abstract
Educated at the Commercial College of Yamaguchi, Kei Shibata proceeded to the Imperial University of Kyoto to carry out postgraduate studies. He became a lecturer in economics at the University in 1929, and a professor in 1939. Ten papers he wrote in English for the Kyoto University Economic Review were well received both inside and outside Japan, and in 1939 he was awarded a doctorate by the University for his book Riron Keizaigaku (Theoretical Economics), published in two volumes in 1935. In 1936–7 he was sent abroad for further studies at Harvard.
