Structure of Higher Education System
Higher education is provided by universities and other public and private institutions. Higher education institutions do not always fall under the responsibility of the MENPF: the University of Haiti is autonomous, some institutions fall under the responsibility of the Ministry of their field of activity, and other institutions are from foreign countries or international organisations. A bill on the modernisation of higher education was introduced in 2013 but was not adopted.
Stages of studies
University level first stage
First degree courses normally last for four to five years and lead to the award of the Licence or a professional title.
University level second stage
A Maîtrise is conferred after two years’ study beyond the Licence. In Medicine, the Diplôme de Docteur en Médecine is conferred after seven years’ study, including periods of internship and practical training.
