Structure of Higher Education System
Description
Higher education is provided by universities, professional institutes and technical training centres. All have tuition fees. Only universities can deliver academic degrees. The Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education is responsible for planning and implementing policies and funds allocation in higher education. The main coordinating bodies are the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (Consejo de Rectores de Universidades Chilenas) which coordinates the traditional state and private universities which were created before the 1980s reform and those derived from these, and the Council for Higher Education (Consejo Superior de Educación) which is responsible for the assessment and accreditation of other private universities. Tuition-free higher education for students from the poorest families was granted in 2016.
