Structure of Higher Education System
In the Bahamas, higher education is provided principally by the University of the Bahamas, originally opened in 1974 as the College of the Bahamas, which offers Associate and Bachelor’s degrees in various fields and several Master’s degrees independently or in conjunction with overseas universities. The Bahamas is also affiliated with the University of the West Indies (UWI) which is a regional institution with campuses in Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados. The UWI maintains an administrative office and a full-time representative in Nassau, through whom Bahamian students may seek admission to any campus. Furthermore, the UWI Centre for Hotel and Tourism Management is located in Nassau. In addition, some American universities offer degree programmes in the Bahamas.
