Introduction
What is Indigenous education in Canada? That is a loaded and emotional question with a horrific history that only since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report released in 2015 are non-Indigenous Canadians beginning to slowly understand and address. Simply put, Indigenous education in Canada has been unjust and was, until only recently, nothing short of cultural genocide. The ultimate goal of residential schools was, as Duncan Campbell Scott said, “to kill the Indian in the child” (TRC 2015). However, he miscalculated a critical strength of Indigenous peoples, that of resiliency and the fight for self-determination. So once again Indigenous education is front and center, this time for a truly ethical revitalization that is inclusive of Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Learning (IWKL).
