Definition
The assessment of dietary intake and, in particular, dietary restriction has been fraught with definitional confusion, leading to unnecessary misunderstandings and controversies within the literature. Without careful definitional clarity, a practitioner may obtain an inaccurate assessment of the nature of an individual’s eating concerns. Therefore, when assessing dietary intake, particularly restrictive eating behavior, it is important to understand and be able to differentiate dietary restriction from related constructs, such as dietary restraint and dieting.
The terms dietary restriction, dietary restraint, and dieting are often used interchangeably, however they refer to notably different phenomena.
