Abstract
The essay describes the training trajectory of a traditional kattaikkuttu performer – a young boy in his early teens – apprenticing with a professional theatre ensemble. It compares the traditional training trajectory with the institutionalized training in kattaikkuttu acting and music that the Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam, a residential theatre school in South India, has provided from 2002 to 2020 to young rural girls and boys in combination with formal education.
