This geopark is located in northern Portugal and covers an area of 330 km2. The geopark acquired its global status in 2009. It has three large geological groups, including bedrock (metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in a mixed schist-sandstone complex), Palaeozoic sequences (Ordovician and Silurian quartzites and schists) and a magma body. The park has important Carboniferous outcrops composed of clastic rocks, rivers and slopes associated with the current hydrological system, modern Quaternary sedimentary units and Ordovician fossil slate with a high thorium content. There are a total of 41 geological sites. Among them, two are of particular international importance: the Canelas Slate Site and On-site Museum and the Castanheira Nodular Granite.
