This site is located in the border area of northwestern Costa Rica near the Pacific Ocean. In 2004, St. Elena Private Reserve was added, which increased the total area to 150 km2. As an important natural habitat for protecting biodiversity, the site contains the best-preserved arid forest environment from Central Africa to northern Mexico, providing a key natural habitat for endangered and rare animal and plant species. Its terrestrial and marine environments and its coastal environment characterise the interface between the land and the sea, and they illustrate important natural ecological processes.
