Environmental capacity is the maximum capacity for contaminants of an environmental system or one of its elements to maintain the health of the population and the ecosystem. It includes two components, namely, the basic environmental capacity (or differential capacity) and the variable capacity (or assimilative capacity). The former can be calculated by subtracting the environmental background value from the proposed environmental labelling value, which is called the absolute capacity. The latter refers to the self-purification capability of the environmental unit.
