The Ediacaran System is named after the Ediacara Hills in South Australia, which is also the origin of the Ediacaran fauna fossil that gets its name from this site. In 2003, the Late Proterozoic System Branch of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) completed its research on the standard section and submitted a report to the committee for validation. The branch proposed the nomenclature ‘Ediacaran’ for the stratigraphic unit of the uppermost period. In 2004, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) approved the inclusion of this term into the International Chronostratigraphic Chart and put it at the top of the Proterozoic Eonothem. The GSSP of this system was chosen to be marked on the Enorama Creek section in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. The bottom boundary of this system is the bottom boundary of the cap carbonate of the Nuccaleena Formation.
