Ancient glaciers are glaciers that formed prior to modern glaciers. There have been several glacial periods over geological history, such as the Sinian glacial period and the Carboniferous-Quaternary glacial period. Glaciers were widely developed during these periods, and only some remaining features can be found today. In general, all glaciers prior to the currently active glaciers are called ancient glaciers (Fig. 18).
