This site is located in the southeastern Solomon Islands in western Vanuatu. It covers an area of 370 km2 and takes up 1/3 of the land area of Rennell Island. It is the world’s largest coral atoll with a length of 86 km and a width of 15 km. The site extends into the ocean approximately 3 nautical miles from the coast. Lake Tegano is a major attraction in the island area. Its predecessor was a lagoon in the atoll, and it is the largest high-salinity lake (155 km2) in the Pacific Islands region. The lake is divided into numerous steep limestone islands with rich endemic species. Most of Rennell Island is covered by dense forests, in which the average height of the tree crowns is approximately 20 m.
